Episode 42

Mark Optiz Part 2

“Sophisto Punk” you say Mr Opitz? A phrase born out from the early days recording The Angels at Alberts. More than just a pun or fancy combining of nouns and adjectives. It represented a sound, a mood and a standard that artists working with Mark would embrace.
It’s his musical DNA that would elicit such great relationships with bands like INXS, Cold Chisel, The Models and AC/DC to name but a few. If Ted Albert and Vanda & Young were The Godfather’s of an emerging Australian music scene, Mark Opitz was proof of their legacy. #inxs #inxsmusic #inxsfans #bobdylan #acdc #kissarmy
So lounge back and digest Part 2 of this deep dive into the legend that is Mark Opitz.
Oh yeah speaking of The Godfather here’s hoping this sequel episode is better than the first!!

INXS Fandom with Special guest Chuck Fieldman

Without the fans packing stadiums, buying albums, and inspiring radio to broadcast their tunes, INXS like all successful bands would have struggled to make it out of the suburban pub scene of the Northern Beaches.
Fans create passion, adoration, inspiration, unity, momentum, and a movement! A movement in INXS’s case that has inspired fans growing up in the 1980s to become the musical figures of the 2000s.
Artists like The Killers, 1975, Arcade Fire, Powderfinger, No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, Adele, Everclear, London Grammar, and Justin Timberlake have all cited and covered INXS either in the studio or on stage. However, it’s “you”’ the everyday fan that INXS are most grateful to and who without, would have never had the lives they undoubtedly have enjoyed.
So today it’s all about celebrating “you” the fan.
So don’t just sit back and listen today. Post, blog, share, and excel in all your fandom joy for INXS on all of our available platforms!!
Who knows, you might just get highlighted on episode 39!!!!  Love and Peace, Haydn and Bee

Andrew Farriss Deep Dive

The musical maestro behind some of music's catchiest melodies, feel-good funk, and heartfelt lyrics, Andrew Farriss is without peer.
The middle brother of a triumvirate musical family, Andrew was happiest on stage hiding “top left-back” allowing his bandmates to strut their stuff.
Essentially the songwriting burden from Listen Like Thieves onwards, Andrew despite the onset pressures and expectations, never failed to deliver thoughtful, catchy, versatile, and classic hooks that connected with our feet, hearts, and heads in the most timeless way.
So block out the external distractions and embrace part one of our Andrew Farriss Special!

Michael Hutchence: Poetry in Motion

So it’s that time again where we posthumously acknowledge the birthday anniversary of that sweet soul of INXS charismatic frontman, Michael Kelland Hutchence.

Unfortunately gone but never forgotten we focus this deep dive on Michael’s work, not the image.

Never one to stray from having a pen and pad handy, Michael put pen to some of the most heartfelt and enduring lyrics. Lyrics that were often understated and definitely underrated. Combining these poetic words with a vocal phrasing and delivery that swooned the hearts and heads of females worldwide and the feet and minds of their male counterparts, Michael’s words and voice live on eternally.
So we examine the legacy today of these two undefinable attributes and illustrate them with examples of gushing joy.
Michael Kelland Hutchence, happy birthday sir!!

A Tribute to Chris Murphy- INXS Manager

“It’s with great sadness that Bee and I learn of the sudden and premature death of INXS Manager Chris Murphy.

Always ahead of the curve, Chris’ business contribution and cutting edge marketing prowess saw Chris have the Midas touch.
Condolences to all the band, the team at Petrol, and to his family.

We know that the INXS community is in shock with this news and we send out our love to you all.
We have to love one another!

INXS v AC/DC

“We’re back in black, it’s been too long, we’re glad to be back”!
Hello and all and best thoughts for 2021.
We’re both excited to join you all again, as we do our second battle of the bands, whereby we compare the career trajectories of these iconic Sydney Australian supergroups. Both achieved the lofty domestic success that then translated internationally with a “live concert” repertoire seducing fans globally. Both suffered the heartfelt loss of popular frontmen in the most unfortunate of circumstances.
Today however we dive deep into the similarities and successes of these iconic bands with a healthy swag of joy, gusto, and “air guitar”.
So as a famous Spinal Tap member said, “turn it up to 11” and enjoy folks!

The Max Q, Part 2 Michael v Murphy

They say that “art vs commerce” are often mutually exclusive...
Well in the case of MAXQ this is certainly true. Riding high on the universal love of INXS’ Kick juggernaut, Michael Hutchence and Chris Murphy were completely opposed as to what should come next. “Capitalise on INXS’ ascent into the pantheon of musical giants or allow members to recharge the batteries and pursue longstanding individual projects?”
With the latter being the chosen pathway, it leads to the ultimate collision course of ideals between Chris and Michael that affected their relationship more than some ever knew.
So get ready for this week's episode when we explore the fallout of this critically acclaimed album and its effect on INXS then going forward. Plus other exclusive interviews with people who were part of Max Q.

The Max Q Review

In the afterglow (get it) of 1988’s Kick album juggernaut, the band took their first genuine break since commencing in 1977.

With all members having a year off in 1989, Michael seized the opportunity to explore the burgeoning dance scene and sonic experimentations that became MAXQ. An album that merged the mainstream with the underground via the cutting edge production talents of Ollie Olsen and Michael Hutchence.

With soundscapes and sonics ahead of its time, MAXQ would represent an artistic and career watershed moment for Michael.
So take the plunge, join us as we do the deepest of album review dives as we play “in full” each track and celebrate one of the world's best musical u-turns by a major label artist!

Thanksgiving INXS in the USA

From 1982-1992, INXS was a much loved and meteoric sensation in the USA with over 7 gold and multi-platinum albums on the Billboard Charts.
With famous gigs like San Bernardino in front of 180,000 people in early 1983 just the beginning, INXS went on to rule the airwaves and hearts of Americans from the West Coast to East. With multiple MTV Award nominations and wins coupled with Grammy recognition, INXS soared the stratosphere stateside like no other born and bred Australian band has ever done!! With musical trends changing and record company support waning, INXS released some of their best material in the 1990s to less commercial success but artistic and critical respect.
So sit back and remember just how significant conquering the Mount Rushmore of Stateside was to the band and appreciate their greatness of our latest episode “INXS in the USA”!

Nick Egan: A true pioneer and pivotal artisan in the creative musical art scene, Nick’s greatest legacy to INXS outside his groundbreaking cover work for album Kick might be his true friendship with Michael.

However, it’s his true friendship with Michael Hutchence over an 11 year period that resonates during this two-part deep dive into Nick’s career.

The Tim Farriss Deep Dive

Big brother, bandleader, bloody good guitarist!!! Timothy William Farriss could not only interpret the wonderful riffs and funk that little brother Andrew wrote but was the truly ambitious visionary for “how far” this little band, out of the northern beaches of Sydney, could take it!
Forming INXS on the day Elvis died on August 16th, 1977, Tim’s distinctive guitar style and musical talent also required him to manage the band in their early days. Averting many a crisis, Tim remained resolute in his belief and quest that the original Farriss Brothers and soon to be called INXS, could take it from the sweaty pubs of Australia to the recording studio and overseas.
So please buckle up as we celebrate, reminisce, and dive deep into one of INXS’s most popular members as we acknowledge the contribution of (play the f..... riff) Tim Farriss.

Listen Like Thieves - Album Review.

The Listen Like Thieves; Album review with Haydn & Bee...

The precursor album to Kick, Listen like Thieves was the crucial recording that united the world producing talents of Chris Thomas. The man whose genius fingertips contributed to the Beatles White Album, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon plus producing credits with The Pretenders, U2, and Roxy Music.

Arguably, INXS’s greatest guitar album, this cohesive collection of 11 tracks pays homage to the vast landscapes of Australia with a sound that is as close to a “live concert” setting. Confident, cleverly constructed, and concise this 38-minute album is still as fresh sounding and pulsating 35 years later.

With no song sounding similar to another, the band’s musical leap was full of daring, unique creativity and unabashed charm.

With many contributions from all of the band members, INXS had never been this exciting and stole the hearts and minds of the Australian record-buying public with 4 strong singles: Original Sin, I send a message, Burn for you and Dancing on the Jetty plus the addition of many great album tracks that pervaded the Australasian sound waves over 1984-85.
